Assembly and Safety Instructions For PERCIVAL

YOUR SAFETY IS OUR FIRST CONCERN

MANDATORY SAFETY & TESTING INSTRUCTIONS

Percival
The new and improved PERCIVAL is an aggressive saw chain power tool accessory designed for controlled and aggressive carving. With the smallest saw chain blade ever made, the applications for stock removal and shaping, especially in tight and deep situations or when you require rounded or cylindrical contours, are endless. It can be used in carving and detailing intermediate to large scale objects at least 6 feet (180cm) in height, free form bowl carving, drum making or ice carving. And this doesnít even scratch the surface of the many incredible applications! The following instructions and operating tips are provided to increase your knowledge of this toolís safety and operation. Please study them carefully before your initial use and it will provide you with many safe hours of productivity and enjoyment.

WARNING: Any power tool with a worn chuck or collet is an unsafe power tool. Percival must not be used on a power tool with a worn collet, chuck or mounting shaft. To prevent serious injury, you must determine the condition of the chuck, collet or mounting shaft in the power tool intended for use. The following tests must be performed prior to assembling. PERCIVAL. TESTS ARE MANDATORY. The vibration caused by a worn chuck, collet or mounting shaft can result in PERCIVAL (or any accessory) traveling out of the collet or chuck. Should this occur, the mounting shaft on PERCIVAL could bend, causing extreme vibration and possible loss of control of the power tool.

VERY IMPORTANT: PRIOR TO CONDUCTING TESTS:
- Comply with safety and operating instructions published by manufacturer of power or air tool used in conjunction with PERCIVAL.
- PERCIVAL comes in three models. Please refer to the Power Units Section for recommendations of your specific model. In summary, depending on the model, they can be used on flex shaft machines, electric mini die grinders or air grinders fitted with or attached to constant pressure switches (paddle switch, dead man switch, kill switch). We also recommend use of an optional variable speed control or rheostat with mini die grinders.
- If the power tool has a locking switch, operate in the unlocked position.
Keep work area clean, well lit and well ventilated. No open flames. Cluttered areas and bench/worktops invite accidents.
- Keep children and visitors a safe distance from work area.
- Do not wear jewelry, loose ornaments or loose fitting garments. Unbuttoned sleeves, baggy shirts or loose fitting aprons or dresses present a hazard. Care must also be taken with long hair and beards. Any of the above can get caught in moving parts.
- Leather gloves and footwear must be worn. Cloth gloves may become frayed and are not recommended.
- Use a full face visor with dust mask.

Very Important: When not in use; before servicing; when changing accessories, remember to disconnect tool or power source. Leaving the power tool on, even temporarily, could result in accidents. Similarly, air tools should not be charged with air or left unattended when noT in use.

- For power carving units on stands, secure the motor at least 6 feet (180cm) above the ground.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions for changing accessories. Refer to specific owner’s operating instructions.

TEST ONE: Plug in the power tool. While holding the tool firmly in your hand, turn on the power switch. When the power tool starts out, a slight twist from the sudden burst of speed should be felt. If a subsequent vibration that continues to shake the hand is felt, the mounting shaft inside the power unit is worn and that unit should not be used with PERCIVAL.

TEST TWO: Note the cutting head (chains, discs, and nut) of PERCIVAL comes loosely assembled. Remove all the above parts from shaft.

INCORRECT ASSEMBLY

- Carefully fit the mounting shaft into the collet or chuck of your power tool. Be sure to follow proper mounting instructions as shown in Diagram A. Note that bottom of guard must fit flush against collet or chuck.
- Tighten the collet nut or chuck as tightly as possible (in accordance with power tool manufacturer’s instructions) with the wrench or chuck key provided with the power tool. Now, with the PERCIVAL shaft and guard only securely mounted in your power tool, prepare to do a quick on and off test to determine if the shaft is mounted properly, runs concentrically and that the collet or chuck is in good condition.
- Holding the power tool with a firm two hand, gloved hold, turn on the switch and turn it off again as quickly as possible. If any vibration is felt, recheck the tightened condition of the tool and also check for proper guard position mounting in the power tool.
Prepare to try the second on and off test. Begin with a firm two hand, gloved hold. Turn on the power tool and turn it off again. If vibration is felt the second time, under no conditions should you assemble PERCIVAL cutting teeth and attempt to use the accessory. Either the mounting shaft in your power tool is worn or the collet or chuck is worn. Any of these conditions creates an unsafe condition for use with PERCIVAL and parts on your power tool must be replaced prior to using PERCIVAL.
- Any off center oscillation of the main shaft or, if the mounting shaft shows a regular pattern of "traveling" out of the collet or chuck, strongly indicates worn parts on the power tool which must be replaced.
- The correct operating condition of your power unit will result in concentric or straight turning of the main shaft and guard, similar to a drill bit running true. On successful completion of these tests, assemble the saw chains, discs and nut to the cutting end of PERCIVAL.

ASSEMBLY OF CHAINS, DISCS & NUT
- The two discs secure the saw chain circlet between them. Refer Diagram B.
- We recommend this instruction be completed on a table or flat surface and that the mounting shaft be secured upright in a vise with the threaded end facing up during assembly.
- Place chain on bottom disc with number 25 stamped on tang facing down. Fit top disc on opposite side of chain circlet so that the discs face each other in a convex/convex manner, securing the chain between the discs. The correct direction of the chain assembly is Diagram B with the tooth on the right and raker (depth gage) on the left when looking down on the chain on a flat surface.Minor adjustment will secure chain snugly between discs.
- A double check is to ensure that the stamping rings on the inside of each disc face each other. Discs will fit flush with the inside of the chain, leaving a visible 1/8" (3mm) gap between them once the chain circlet is secured.
- Fit chain and discs over threaded end of main shaft until chain assembly (1) meets the shoulder of the shaft. Insure pointed hook end of the rakers (depth gage) remain pointed right.
- Hand tighten the 1/4" (6mm) nyloc nut with one 7/16" (12mm) open ended box wrench or crescent (or two if the shaft has flats on the shaft) to secure the chain between the discs. If using two wrenches, place one wrench on the flats of the shaft and the other to tighten the nut. There must be no slippage of chain between discs.

IMPORTANT: If assembled in reverse to motor direction, PERCIVAL will not cut, leaving burn marks on work piece.

REGULAR INSPECTIONS
The position of the PERCIVAL mounting shaft must be checked at regular intervals, no more than five (5) minutes apart. This safety check is visually done by checking to see that the base of the guard on PERCIVAL is still in contact with the top of the collet #

Read and comply with safety and operating instructions published by manufacturer of power or air tool used in conjunction with PERCIVAL.
- Keep work area clean, well lit and well ventilated. No open flames. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents.
- Keep children and visitors a safe distance from work area.
- Store idle tools in dry, high or locked place out of reach of children.
- Do not overload the power unit by using excessive force when cutting. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
- Do not wear jewelry, loose ornaments or loose fitting garments. Unbuttoned sleeves, baggy shirts or loose fitting aprons or dresses present a hazard. Care must also be taken with long hair and beards. Any of the above can get caught in moving parts.
- Leather gloves, especially on the free hand, and footwear are highly recommended. Cloth gloves may become frayed and are not recommended.
- Use a full face visor combined with a dust mask. PERCIVAL’s cutting action may cause chips to be thrown back into operatorís face.
- Keep proper footing and balance at all times.

VERY IMPORTANT: When not in use; before servicing; when changing accessories, remember to disconnect tool or power source. Leaving the power tool on, even temporarily, could result in accidents if foot pedal to the power unit is accidently turned on or stepped on. Similarly, air tools should not be charged with air or left unattended when not in use.
- Under no circumstances should a damaged or bent shaft be straightened and reused. The part must be replaced. Refer this situation immediately to King Arthurís Tools.
- Keep face and free hand at least 12" (30cm) from cutting head.
- Keep the work piece firmly secured in a work bench or vise. Never use free hand to hold or steady workpiece.
- Keep tools cleaned and oiled for best and safest performance.
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for changing accessories. Refer to specific owner’s operating instructions.
- Use only extension cords suitable for outdoor use. Approved cords are marked with the suffix W-A e.g. SJTW-A or SJOW-A. Inspect cords periodically and replace when damaged.
- Do not attempt to reach underneath work piece or remove material while the blade is
turning.
- Do not operate Percival while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, medication or when tired. Stay alert and use common sense. Do not rush.
- Guard against kickback. Release the switch immediately if the blade stalls or binds. Do not remove PERCIVALR from work piece during the cutting operation while the cutting heads are moving - remove when the unit has been stopped.
- When you switch the unit off, do not bang the cutter head against a work bench or work piece to bring the tool rotation to a stop.
- Do not lay the cutter head down until it has stopped completely.
- Do not start PERCIVAL when its cutting head is in contact with the work piece.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - AIR TOOLS
- Never carry tool by the hose or yank it to disconnect from power supply.
- Keep hoses and cables from heat, oil and sharp edges.
- Check hoses and cables for weak or worn condition before each use, making certain that all connections are secure.
- Do not exceed maximum operating pressure. Do not operate above 25,000 RPM.
- With mini die grinders check the housing on the motor for over heating on a regular basis. PERCIVAL can easily work the power source beyond its capacity if not checked every 15-20 minutes. See Owners Instruction manual for respective manufacturers.
- Do not use free hand to press down on the guard as a handle for additional leverage.
- Use a standard round 5/32" (4mm) chain saw file for sharpening teeth.
- When sharpening teeth while still connected to spindle, 1) turn power source or air off, 2) wear a leather glove to hold the teeth/discs steady and use the other hand to sharpen teeth. With normal usage, a few light strokes (3-6) on each tooth will keep them sharp. Regularly check teeth and keep sharp.

POWER TOOLS WITH REVERSIBLE MOTORS
- Left handed users will find this feature useful in their work. Power tools run in a clockwise rotation for right hand use and PERCIVAL, as described in the chain assembly instructions, is no exception. Left handed users need only remove the nut, flip the discs and chain circlet on the end of the threaded shaft and retighten nut (or reassemble in reverse). Extreme caution must be exercised as the tool will have a tendency to move toward the front of the work area if power source is accidently switched on or otherwise activated.

POWER UNITS RECOMMENDATIONS
- Important Foreword: PERCIVAL is available in three models each with ºî diameter mounting shafts but with different shaft lengths of 4î (100mm), 4-5/16î (108mm) and 6î (150mm). These important distinctions are explained below.
- The short 4" (100mm) model 42008 is specifically manufactured with a short mounting shaft suitable for the short collet length and barrel depth found on most flex shaft machines. For this reason the 4î (100mm) model 42008 is recommended for these units only. As shown below, we do not recommend any other PERCIVAL models on flex shaft machines.
The other two models have a total shaft length of 4-5/16" (108mm) (part # 42508) and 6" (150mm) (part # 62508). Significantly, both of these have a longer mounting shaft suitable to fit most air and mini die grinders which generally have a collet length of at least 1" (25mm) and a barrel depth of 1-1/4" (31.75mm). To achieve optimum safety and because PERCIVAL is a powerful, heavy accessory, the safest way to achieve this is to have all of the mounting shaft inside the barrel, secured by the collet or chuck. There must be no gap between the bottom of the guard and the top of the collet/chuck. The potential for a bent shaft increases if there is any gap between them. For versatility on these power units only, we offer PERCIVAL in the short and long versions.

PERCIVAL 4" (100MM) MODEL 42008
- Recommended for flexible shaft machines with "hp motors", collet and rated up to a maximum of 25,000rpm.
Note: These 100mm (4") models have a shorter mounting shaft than all other models. Due to the shorter collet size of flexible shaft machines, we recommend that only the above model be used for flex shaft units.

PERCIVAL 4-1/4" (108MM) MODEL 42508 AND 6" (180MM) MODEL 62508
-Recommended for mini (1-1/2") electric die grinders with º" collet or chuck, rated at 2-4 amps, maximum 25,000rpm, and air grinders to 90psi. Electric die grinders and air grinders must have a minimum barrel depth of 31.75mm (1-1/4"). Simply put, all of the mounting shaft must fit in the ìthroat" of the power unit - no gap allowed!

DO NOT USE these products ON POWER UNITS OTHER THAN RECOMMENDED above, nor Craftsman rotary die grinders, routers or drills.
- Highly recommended for use only on power tools fitted with or activated by constant pressure switches (paddle switch, dead man switch, "kill" switch). If the power tool has a locking switch, operate in the unlocked position. For mini die grinders, the use of a variable speed control or rheostat is also strongly recommended. Though rated up to 25,000 rpm, PERCIVAL works best between 15,000 to 20,000 rpm. This accessory is a powerful tool that could cause overheating and damage to flex shaft cables if used on an under powered unit.

OPERATING TIPS
- For peak performance, PERCIVAL is best used at high speed and with sharp teeth. The faster the speed, the sharper the tool, the faster the cut. It is important to regularly check the teeth and keep them sharp. Before attempting cuts on your work piece, test PERCIVAL on a piece of scrap wood to get the feel of the cutting power by using it in different directions. For fast stock removal, use a firm two hand, gloved hold and constantly change the angle of removal.
- The smoothest cut is with the grain; fastest cut is across the grain. Cutting end grain, there is greater wood removal in pushing away from the body. When pulling toward the body, less wood is removed and there is less control, however a steady push/pull, backward and forward motion leaves a cylindrical shape the deeper the wood is penetrated. High speed cutting leaves a polished looking finish on hard wood; slower speed surfaces leave a rougher finish.
- Undercutting requires using the top section of PERCIVAL to press up into the material. Practice with this cut is recommended and can be very useful in many applications. For remodeling jobs it can also be used in this manner for cutting PVC pipe from the inside.
- Cutting hardwood areas such as knots when also cutting a large soft area adjacent to the knot generates a different "feel" to PERCIVAL and its cutting action as it cuts through knots.
- There may be a tendency to overcut the soft wood surrounding the knot and slightly undercut the knot. Attention should be paid to control at this point where more effort and possibly more passes may be required over the knot area, even changing direction over the knot area.
- Cutting over a right angle. It is recommended, if possible, to cut along the line of the ridge on the angle rather than allow PERCIVAL to climb or crawl, thus preventing the tendency of the tool to cut deep on the opposite side of the ridge.
