The Merlin Mini Hoof Trimming Set (#10095) is designed for people who have miniature horses. You can use the Merlin to remove excess hoof material, clean pith from the sole area and dress flare from the hoof wall - using one of two different trimming blades included in the set.

First is the Garnet colored tungsten carbide disc. This disc is designed with the miniature horse in mind. It’s two inches in width and is used to remove hoof material through abrasion. Combined with the variable speed grinder, this disc isn’t intimidating to the horse or user. It makes it very easy and effective way to trim these small hooves. It doesn’t get any easier than this. The set also includes the 4-tooth chain disc which is our primary trimming blade. It’s included because it can easily be used on miniature horses and we’ve found that it’s preferred by a lot of the customers that use the tool. It’s easy to use on the hoof but can be a little overwhelming to some. The chain saw disc is used on both a standard and a draft horse which makes this set the right choice for horse owners with different size animals.

Either disc will work effectively on the miniature horse hoof; it just depends on what you’re comfortable with. Some customers have started out using the Garnet disc, becoming comfortable with the tool, practiced using the chain saw blade on a piece of wood and then moving to the hoof.

Select #10090 if you’re going to be trimming standard and draft horses. Select #10095 if you trim standard, draft and/or miniature horses.

The two things about a hoof knife are sharpness and the ability to control the knife as you’re making the cut.

The general consensus of most people familiar with hoof knives is that the hoof knife is difficult to sharpen and requires a certain level of skill. Sharpening a hoof knife isn’t a problem for the Professional Farrier but for a Horse Owner who trims his own animal they find that one of the advantages to using chain saw technology is the ease in sharpening the four (4) teeth. It requires the use of a diamond coated chain saw file due to the tungsten carbide teeth. The whole sharpening process takes less than 5 minutes and should be done after every two or three trimmings. It only takes three or four passes of the file on the tooth to tune it up. This guarantees you a sharp tool the next time you need it and it helps extend the life of the blade.

You had to learn how to use a hoof knife and develop the feel in gauging the depth of a cut on the hoof while having enough arm strength to pull the hoof knife through the hoof.

It’s almost the same with MERLIN just not as strenuous. The operator will develop the ability to control the depth of the cut through feel. The combination of the grinder size, the unique cutting action of the chain saw blade and how the unit balances in your hand allows the operator to use the MERLIN in a very precise manner. You can remove hoof material as small as micro thin slivers.

The major difference is just how easy it is to trim with the MERLIN. You just let the tool do the cutting as you control the area and amount of hoof material to be removed.

5 of 5 Stars! We raise registered Boer goats and hoof trimming is an on-going job. We find that we just do not have the hand and arm strength to use manual hoof trimmers long enough to get the job done quickly - we have to quit after trimming just one or two goats. So recently (March 2011), we ordered the Merlin. This has worked great for us; in fact, I plan to order another one so we can keep the chain cutter on one for the very heavy, hard hooves on the bucks, and the grinder on the other. The grinder gets them perfectly smooth with very little effort. It is not hard to change from the cutter to the grinder, but could get the job done quicker if we had two units. The cutter is very aggressive, and the videos are correct when they say you have to "choke up" on it to control it. But it is wonderful when you are working on very hard or overgrown hooves - really reduces the time that you have to keep the buck tied up or in the chute, which reduces the stress on him. This is a very powerful, well-made piece of equipment, and I agree with the videos that you have to pay attention when you are using it. The only suggestion for improvement is that the on/off switch is very sensitive and it is easy to accidentally turn it back on. It would be safer if the on/off switch were not so sensitive or if you could rececess it somewhere. But we learned real quick to lay it down carefully..... -
Your shipping was very prompt, and we received regular emails letting us know the status of our order. The price made us gasp at first, but now we really appreciate having this product, and wish we would have found it 5 years ago!
